10 great Canadian pit stops recommended by Maclean’s readers
For decades, Owl Street Cafe has been loved by not only locals, but also visitors around the world.
In 2012, Maclean’s asked readers to share their favourite highway eats from coast to coast. Here are 10 of the most popular picks and what people said:
1. Owl Street Café, Hope, B.C. “The food is fresh, made to order and organic. Give it a shot if you are driving to the interior from Vancouver or the Fraser Valley.”
……
Whether you choose homemade Omelettes, Bacon & Egger Sandwich or Dutch baby pancake, breakfast at the Owl Street Cafe will be memorable. The caramel latte is so addictive – remember, we warned you!
You have an hour for lunch? Great. Take a five minute ride down the hill and tuck yourself away at the Owl Street Cafe for your lunch break. Get ready to be pampered. May we recommend the Montreal Smoked Meat, and see if you can eat it all!
Our all coffee is from Cherry hill Coffee Inc.
Cherry Hill Coffee has been hand-roasting coffee daily in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada since 1986. Any great art is born out of passion; Cherry Hill’s is coffee. Why our customers love us
Whilst driving from Vancouver to Kamloops we stopped off in Hope as we were advised this was a good little town to visit. Just off the Highway we saw the signs for Owl Street Cafe so decided to pop by. So glad we did ! Three of us had homemade mushroom soup and cheese toasties and hubby ordered the Dutch Baby Pancake special. We were advised that the pancake took 15 minutes to cook so we sat outside in the garden as it was a lovely day. We were served at the table – and as typical English we ordered breakfast tea rather than coffee. Four pots of tea arrived fresh and tasty and the soup and cheese toasties soon after. Everything was fantastic, the staff were friendly and service was quick. Hubbys Dutch Baby Pancake was extra special, it was a sweet, large Yorkshire Pudding type dessert with fresh fruit and ice cream.
All in all a great find and would highly recommend a visit. Good value too.
Quiet little place for a lunch and good coffee. Staff are very friendly.
The atmosphere is very unique and comfy, and the foods and drinks are absolutely superb. The Dutch Baby is a must try!
This place is so cool inside. Very yummy homemade breakfasts and a great lunch stop with homemade soup and yummy sandwiches.
The lovely staff took pity on some weary travelers and fed us delicious soup and iced coffee even though they were closing up. Loved the 300 owls too!
We stayed at the airbnb right above the cafe and had breakfast there in the morning. The people are great, the food was excellent and surpassed expectations, and it’s super cute inside. Definitely worth a visit!
Great spot and even greater value! Very generous with the bacon on my BLT. Cesar salad was ok but the homemade chicken soup was amazing. Prices are super reasonable, my family of 5 are for 50$! Only thing is choose he soup over the salad! The outside eating area is cozy and comfortable.
We had breakfast here with tje family and it was really great. The Roastbeef Sandwich and the Bagels with cream cheese and fruit were really delicious! And the stuff was very friendly and helpful. Er hab Rally gekommen this lovely cafe.
Patio is gorgeous on a sunny day! The food was great, especially their special “Dutch baby”! The staff were really friendly and accommodating. The decor is charming. We had a really lovely time and will definitely be coming back!
Traveling through! Excellent stopping spot for a wonderful and truly home cooked lunch. All was wonderful and fresh! Lattes (even had almond milk), chicken noodle soup, chili, tuna sandwich, smoked beef sandwich. Excellent and friendly service. Clean bathrooms. Nice atmosphere with beautiful wood tables.
There is hope in Hope! Such a lovely cafe with a homey feel! The food was delicious and homemade! Fresh ingredients and made to order. Such a delightful surprise! And good cappuccino too. Definitely will return and a quick stop if you are just driving through.
Wonderful spot to stop! We had been driving all night and was looking for a non-franchise place to stop for breakfast and this was a wonderful place to find. It’s a little off the beaten path but worth it. Great Atmosphere, and food. We had the two free range eggs breakfast with regular toast and gluten free toast. Delicious! Well worth the stop.
